Saxon Switzerland Day Trips

Saxon Switzerland is a sandstone landscape of rock towers, gorges and the Bastei bridge, reached from Dresden in under an hour by S-Bahn line S1 towards Kurort Rathen. Organised day trips from Dresden bundle the transport, a guide and usually a hike, a boat ride or a visit to Königstein Fortress, and many also cross into Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic.

Good to know: You can do the classic Bastei walk on your own for little more than a rail ticket, so a tour is worth it mainly for the guide, the pickup, and trips that combine several stops. Prices vary widely because some tours are small-group or private. Offers that start in Prague are not listed here; they leave from there and need a separate journey.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the main sights of Dresden on foot?

Yes. The Semperoper, the Zwinger, the Residenzschloss, the Brühl Terrace and the Frauenkirche stand close together in the Old Town. You only need a boat, a train or a tour for the Elbe valley, Pillnitz, Meißen and Saxon Switzerland.

How do I get to the Bastei bridge in Saxon Switzerland?

The S-Bahn line S1 from Dresden Hauptbahnhof reaches Kurort Rathen in about 45 minutes, usually every 30 minutes. From the station a small ferry crosses the Elbe, then a path with many steps leads up to the bridge. Organised day trips bundle this with a guide and often a boat ride or a second stop.

Can I do a day trip from Dresden to Prague?

Yes, but it is a long day: the direct train takes roughly two hours each way. Most offers in our list start in Dresden, and trips that leave from Prague are not included, because you would need to get to Prague first. Check the departure point on each booking page.

How do I get to Meißen and is a tour worth it?

The S-Bahn line S1 takes about 37 minutes from Dresden Hauptbahnhof, and a paddle steamer also runs on the Elbe. A tour is worth it mainly if you want a guide, a wine tasting or a combined itinerary; the porcelain factory and the old town can also be visited on your own.

Is a Semperoper tour the same as a performance ticket?

No. Most listings on our Semperoper page are guided visits of the building, usually short. A seat at an evening performance is a different product, so read the title and the description before you book.

When do the Christmas market tours run?

They are seasonal and run in the weeks before Christmas. The Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt itself is free to enter and ends on 24 December; the tours add guides, tastings and photo sessions. Check the exact dates on the booking page for your year.
