Saxon Switzerland from Dresden: Bastei tour, or go on your own by S-Bahn?

5 min read

The answer first. For most visitors without a car, the S-Bahn plus a walk is the cheapest way into Saxon Switzerland, and a tour is worth paying for only if you want the logistics handled or want to add Bohemia. The full-day Saxon Switzerland National Park trip is the most-reviewed of these: €30 per person for seven hours, rated 4.7 from 1,188 reviews. If you want to walk at your own pace, go by train.

Going on your own

According to the Saxon Switzerland national park, the S-Bahn line S1 runs every 30 minutes. The Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) says it goes from Dresden to Pirna, Rathen, Königstein and Bad Schandau, and that most Elbe ferries accept its fares. For the journey time on your date, look at the VVO or Deutsche Bahn planner. The tickets are sold at station machines and in the VVO, DVB and DB Navigator apps; the VVO also lists a day ticket, so check its current price rather than relying on a figure here.

For the Bastei, the usual route is to the Kurort Rathen stop, across the Elbe by ferry and then on foot. Elbe ferries are a separate fare in some places, so check the Rathen crossing. A storm on 31 July 2026 damaged the woods between the Bastei, Rathen and Hohnstein. According to the national park, the Basteiweg from Kurort Rathen, the Bastei viewpoint and the bridge are open, the path through the Schwedenlöcher reopens on 7 November 2026, and some paths around Rathen stay closed for repairs, so check the park’s current notices before you go. The national park warns that hiking car parks fill up quickly in peak season.

What a tour does for you

The listing for the full-day trip names the Bastei lookout rock and the Königstein Fortress, with an optional steamer trip on the day. According to the booking page, the guide speaks German only, entry to the Bastei lookout and bridge is included, but the Königstein Fortress admission and the paddle-steamer trip are not and are paid on site; the page does not recommend the trip for people with mobility impairments. Three of the tours name Bohemia in their titles, and all three list English-speaking guides, hotel pickup in Dresden and lunch. The 2-country tour visits Bastei Bridge, Pravčická Gate and the Narnia filming site at Tisa Rocks from April to October, with about 9 to 10 km on foot; from November to March it covers only Bastei Bridge and Tisa Rocks, with about 4 km. The Bastei, gorge boat and Narnia tour is a small-group trip whose boat ride through the Kamenice gorge belongs to the April to October itinerary only; in winter it also covers just Bastei Bridge and Tisa Rocks. The 10-hour Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland trip needs at least two people to run. Bring a passport or ID card for the Czech side; the 10-hour trip asks for a valid passport.

The boat alternative

If you do not want to walk, the Bad Schandau boat trip runs along the Elbe through Saxon Switzerland, starting in Dresden or Bad Schandau. It takes 4 to 7 hours depending on the option and costs €29; according to the booking page, the commentary is in English and German, and very high or low water can change the timetable or cancel trips. Our Elbe river cruise guide lists the others.

Who should choose what

Choose the train if you want to hike, are comfortable reading a timetable and would rather take a different route. Choose a tour if you want a fixed day with someone else organising the route, or the Bohemian part. If you want long hikes at your own pace, a fixed programme leaves less room for them. Trail conditions vary, so read the national park’s route information before you set out. Ask the operator about accessibility before booking if that matters to you.

If you prefer driving, compare a rental car for Dresden first, and mind the parking warning above. For more tours, see Saxon Switzerland day trips.

Our recommendation

Take the S-Bahn if the weather is good and you like to walk. Book the full-day trip if you want the Bastei and Königstein in one day without planning connections, understand German and budget for the fortress ticket on top.
