Semperoper Dresden: guided tour or performance, and how do you get tickets?
4 min read
The answer first. If you only want to see the building, book the Semperoper tickets and guided tour. It lasts 45 minutes, costs €16 per person and is rated 4.7 from 13,447 reviews, the most of any Dresden listing. If you want to hear the house in use, a performance is a different purchase altogether and goes through the Semperoper itself. If you want the opera house and the Old Town in one outing, choose one of the two combinations below.
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semperoper tickets and guided tour | 45 minutes | €16 | 4.7 | 13,447 |
| Semperoper guided tour for families | 45 minutes | €16 | 4.6 | 505 |
| Semperoper and Old Town tour | 2.5 hours | €28 | 4.8 | 6,311 |
| City and Semperoper guided walking tour | 170 minutes | €30 | 4.7 | 2,537 |
| Semperoper and Residenzschloss | 2 hours | €32 | 4.6 | 267 |
The short tour, and what it can and cannot do
The listing promises the history and architecture of the house in 45 minutes. That is a good fit for a first visit with limited time. According to the booking page, the guides speak English and German, and the admission ticket is included. Taking photos inside needs a photo licence for €3, sold at the start of the tour, and luggage or large bags are not allowed. The operator’s listings say visits are possible nearly every day when no performance or other event is on, so the start times change from day to day.
The combinations
The Semperoper and Old Town tour is described as a tour with entry tickets plus the Old Town and its main attractions. The City and Semperoper walking tour names the Frauenkirche, the Procession of Princes, the castle and the Zwinger; museum tickets are not included, and its booking page calls it wheelchair accessible but also not suitable for people with mobility impairments, so ask the operator if that matters to you. The Semperoper and Residenzschloss tour adds a ticket for the museums in the Royal Palace instead of a street walk. According to its booking page, that is a single entry to the palace museums except the Historic Green Vault, it can be used on a different day, and the voucher must first be exchanged at the Schinkelwache on Theaterplatz, which is closed on Sundays. All three combinations are guided in German only, according to their booking pages. If a church interior is on your list, read our Frauenkirche guide first, because the church itself decides what you can enter.
Going to a performance instead
The Semperoper’s ticket page says tickets are sold through the online calendar, by phone, by email and in person at the Schinkelwache visitor service on Theaterplatz. The evening box office opens one hour before each performance. According to the FAQ, tickets are sometimes still available shortly before a performance, but that is possible, not promised. The FAQ also says that most performance tickets count as a public transport ticket on the VVO network from four hours before to eight hours after the event. Student tickets and other offers exist, so check the house’s own pages for current conditions and prices.
Practical points from the FAQ: the cloakroom is free, and coats and large bags should go there. Food and drink are not allowed in the auditorium, and photography and recording are not permitted during performances. The house suggests dressing so you feel comfortable, with evening wear for galas and premieres. Most operas have German and English surtitles, but check the page for your performance.
Families
The Semperoper says children are welcome, but recommends that children under six do not attend regular performances. The family tour is a separate 45-minute listing for families. The guide speaks German only, which matters if your children do not; if you are bringing small children, ask the operator about a minimum age.
Who should skip it
Skip the tour if you want to experience music in the hall; a ticket for a performance is the only way to do that. Skip the long combinations if your legs or schedule allow only an hour. More options are collected under Semperoper tours and concerts and walking tours in Dresden.
Our recommendation
For most visitors, the 45-minute Semperoper tour is the simplest choice. Pick a combination only if you want the Old Town explained in the same outing.
