Dresden with kids: what works for families, and what does not
5 min read
The answer first. Dresden suits families best in short, guided pieces rather than all-day sightseeing. The KID.s tour of the Gläserne Manufaktur is the offer made for children: €9 per person, rated 4.6 from 787 reviews, 45 minutes. One catch for visitors who do not speak German: the booking page lists the guide as German-speaking, and the same goes for every Semperoper family tour below. We name the age rules of each offer in the sections below.
| Offer | Duration | From | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KID.s tour of the Gläserne Manufaktur | 45 minutes, in German | €9 | 4.6 | 787 |
| Semperoper guided tour for families | 45 minutes, in German | €16 | 4.6 | 505 |
| Dresden Transport Museum ticket | Own pace | €12 | 4.5 | 214 |
| German Hygiene Museum ticket | Own pace | €12 | 4.5 | 42 |
| VR time travel to the Baroque era | 45 minutes | €24.90 | 4.5 | 1,206 |
| 3D black light mini-golf | 1.5 hours | €14 | 4.5 | 94 |
The Gläserne Manufaktur: for ages 6 to 12
The listing says families explore the factory together, with child-friendly guided tours that encourage children to join in. The Gläserne Manufaktur’s own page gives a recommended age of 6 to 12, a duration of 45 minutes and a maximum of 18 people, with tours on Saturdays at 11:30 and 13:30. Both pages describe a quiz with a small surprise for the children at the end. The booking page lists a German-speaking guide, so the tour suits families who understand German; for younger children, ask before booking.
The Semperoper for families
The family tour is a 45-minute guided visit of the opera house made for families, in German. Taking photos inside needs a licence for €3, sold at the start. There are also themed family tours: The Nutcracker, Hansel and Gretel and Semper’s Fairy-Tale World, which have few or no reviews yet. All three are guided in German; according to the booking pages, Semper’s Fairy-Tale World is meant for children aged 4 to 8, the Nutcracker tour for children aged 6 and over and Hansel and Gretel for children aged 8 and over. Details on the building and the tickets are in our Semperoper guide.
Museums and rainy days
The Dresden Transport Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Mondays except Easter Monday and Whitsun Monday. It has a children’s route and a Bobby Car traffic park. According to the museum’s ticket page, children aged 5 and under enter free, and while building work lasts the entrance is at the rear of the Johanneum. It is also closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and on 1 January. The German Hygiene Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays; it has a children’s museum, “Our Five Senses”. The museum’s visitor page says children under 17 enter free, so a family may only need tickets for the adults.
For something indoors that is not a museum, the VR time travel is a 45-minute ride in a virtual carriage to the Baroque era, and the mini-golf runs 1.5 hours under UV light. Both booking pages say they are not suitable for children under 6; the mini-golf also excludes people with epilepsy and people with visual impairments. If you prefer the outdoors, the Wonder Forest scavenger hunt is a mobile game in the Großer Garten; the price covers a group of up to 10 people, you print the treasure map at home, and the booking page says it is not suitable for children under 7. It has only 6 reviews, rated 3.7.
On the river
A boat is an easy way to give small legs a rest. The city cruise takes 1.5 hours, with commentary in German and English, and runs in winter too. See the paddle steamer guide for what each trip is. If toilets or shade on board matter to you, ask the operator before you book.
When it is a bad idea
Think twice about evening tours with very young children: a late start and a walk outdoors in the dark is a lot for a small child, and the night watchman tours in our Old Town guide are in German. Do not plan two museums in one day with children under six. For winter visits, see the Christmas Garden guide.
Our recommendation
For ages 6 to 12, combine the Transport Museum with the Hygiene Museum’s children’s museum, and add the KID.s tour on a Saturday if your children follow German. For children under 6, choose one museum and the city cruise; the VR ride and the mini-golf are not for them, and of the Semperoper tours only Semper’s Fairy-Tale World (ages 4 to 8, in German) is aimed at them.
